Your average undergrad student may take a year off to live abroad, try their hand at a startup or muse over existentialism in a cross-country drive.

But Penn undergraduate researcher Anna Brill beat all those clichéd plans hands down: she spent her year off working on some pretty cool-lookin’ robots.

What is a “real” company, anyway?

Figuring out which companies are “real” and which ones aren’t is key to productive, relevant coverage of any tech ecosystem. The term is often kicked around in our newsroom when a new company reaches out with an update. “Are they real?” can also be thought of as the question that helps us keep tabs on the big companies of the future.

The Pennovation Center in Gray’s Ferry has just earned LEED Gold certification.

Co-designed by Hollwich Kushner and Philly firm KSS Architects, Pennovation is a new innovation center in Grays Ferry, run by the University of Pennsylvania.

One of the most notable features of the 58,000-square-foot center is its facade, an angular structure that shoots out from the side with views of University City. But it’s the behind-the-scenes details that helped Pennovation earn LEED Gold, which is the second-to-highest rating after Platinum.
