Testing a novel, community-driven response to heat islands in Philadelphia
With global temperatures rising annually exposure to hotter temperatures can impact people negatively, especially those with health issues.
That's why University of Pennsylvania researchers from the Stuart Weitzman School of Design, School of Nursing, and Penn Engineering developed a solar-powered wooden bus shelter that provides shade and radiant cooling.
The 15-by-10-by-7-foot wooden structure was built over the summer in a fabrication workshop at Pennovation Works and then transported to nonprofit North10 Philadelphia in Hunting Park to be tested by community members.
