January was filled with events to help founders protect their Intellectual Property.

We hosted a lunch and learn with Nate Hecker and Jarid Arnold from Big Idea!. They discussed how to find the right type of IP strategy that aligns with your business goals, how protecting your ideas paves the way for scaling. what savvy investors look for in your IP portfolio, harnessing artificial intelligence to strengthen your strategy, and much more.

Cynthia Dahl, Penn Carey Law's Detkin IP Clinic Director, instructed attendees how to build and protect their trademarks touching on topics such as choosing a defensible mark, distinguishing trademarks from other name uses, understanding when to apply for formal legal protection, and defending and keeping marks strong to build brand equity. To wrap up the month, Pennovation Works and PCI Ventures hosted a virtual seminar with Phyllis Simon, a registered patent attorney with the USPTO and patent attorney for the Penn Center for Innovation, on the lifecycle of a patent. Phyllis got granular on patenting practices like provisional patents, PCTs, and national phase filings and shared examples of companies that have successfully leveraged their patent portfolio.
